The 5th Annual Chesty Puller Memorial Twin Bridge 10K Run held in the Town of West Point, VA on Saturday morning, June 23, 2012. The race honored the most decorated Marine in history, Marine General Chesty Puller who lived in West Point, Virginia.
Proceeds from the race benefits the West Point Historical Society for the purpose of creating a West Point Historical Museum and the Wounded Warrior Project. The race itself was conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula
Track Club. Conditions at race time were typical mid-summer conditions, mostly sunny, humid but with a breeze and temperatures in the upper 70s. For the second year there was a timed Kids 1 Mile Run that started at the
10K start and ran the first mile of the 10K course. 16 kids ran thisevent (up from 7 in 2011). For the 10K, 145 entered the race (up from 131 runners in 2011) with 129 runners completing the course (up from 119 in 2011). The course looped through downtown West Point, passing the home of Chesty Puller, over the Mattaponi River Bridge into King & Queen County, then back over that bridge, through downtown West Point, and continued for an out-and-back
over the Pamunkey River Bridge into Eltham, then back again over the bridge, finishing in West Point. The 10K course is USATF Certified #VA-10031-RT and was followed correctly by the runners. The 10K run was won by Russell Reed, 19 of Onemo, VA with a time of 38:42
(6:14 pace). First woman was Stephanie Cario, 20 of Mechanicsville, VA with a time of 43:45 (7:03 pace) which also set an age-group record for Women 20-24. Another age group record was set form Women 70+ by Joan Coven, 71 of West Point with a time of 55:16.Bruce Davis
