The 2nd Annual Gallopond Gallop 5K held on Friday evening, June 12, 2015. The race course was mostly cross country on groomed trails around Gallopond Lane in Gloucester. It is one of the most challenging 5K courses in the area. Race activities went beyond the 5K race with lots of food and several bands performing along with displays of NASCAR equipment used by the K&N Pro Series East drivers with several drivers present. The race itself was conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were very warm and humid with temperatures in the low 90s.
44 runners entered the 5K, with 42 completing the course. The hot early June weather, traffic tie-ups on the Peninsula and area high school graduations were obstacles. The 5K race course is not certified, but was accurately measured and was followed correctly by the runners. For the men, the top three overall finishers were a replay of the innaugural Gallopond Gallop in 2014. Alexey Popov, 32 of Newport News remains undefeated at this race, finishing 1st Overall with a time of 21:13 (6:50 pace on a very hot and hilly course). For the second year in a row, Eldridge Northstein, 52 of Gloucester took 2nd Overall Male in 21:56 with Chad Simpson also finishing the same as he did in 2014, 3rd Male Overall with a time of 23:17.
For the women, the Top Overall Finisher was Karla Havens, 53 of Plainview in a time of 23:42. 2nd Woman Overall was Johanna Northstein, 47 of Gloucester in 24:29 with Diana Cole, 40 of Yorktown coming in at the 3rd Overall Woman in 26:58.
