The 5th Annual JLHR Race for a Better Place 5K & 8K were sponsored by the Junior League of Hampton Roads and were held on Saturday morning, April 19, 2014. The races were organized to raise awareness of female reproductive cancer and provide support services for women in Hampton Roads. The race itself was conducted and race results generated by the Peninsula Track Club.
Held on the roads around the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, the 5K and 8K courses are not USATF certified. Conditions at race time were rainy and cool with a slight breeze, light rain and temperatures aorund 50.
A total of 321 runners entered the races (up from 156 in 2013) with 224 completing the either the 5K or the 8K (up from 121 in 2013).

The JLHR Race for a Better Place 8K & 5K Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, April 19th at 8:30 a.m. at The Mariners’ Museum, rain or shine. The 8K and 5K will start and finish at The Mariners’ Museum and run through the Riverside area. Racers, runners, walkers, and strollers are welcome!
Participants will enjoy coffee and bananas prior to the race and PIZZA, draft BEER, and other goodies following the race. Participants and supporters will also enjoy music from a live DJ, a post-race expo, and a free ticket raffle. With each registration, participants will receive a t-shirt (t-shirt availability guaranteed through April 1), a goody bag, 2 beer tickets, and a raffle ticket.
The JLHR Race for a Better Place is a family-friendly event. Kids’ activities will be available, including a 100 yard dash for kids ages 12 and under ($5 participant fee). Children’s activities guaranteed for the first 75 children. Register kids here.
