Below are the award winners for the Riverwatch on the Piankatank 5K held on the roads in the Riverwatch community on the Piankatank River in Gloucester, VA on Saturday afternoon, November 14, 2020. The race was conducted by the Peninsula Track Club.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Riverwatch on the Piankatank had been postponed from June 2020 to this November date. In fact, due to Covid-19, the Riverwatch 5K was the first fully live race scored by the Peninsula Track Club since the Gloucester 8K on March 7 The Riverwatch on the Piankatank 5K was a PTC Grand Prix event as well as a Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix event. The 5K course is not USATF certified at this time, but was accurately measured and was run correctly by the runners as measured.
Conditions at race time were great for running, sunny with a temperature in the low 60s at race start. 100 runners and 20 walkers entered the race, with 88 runners and 18 walkers completing the 5K. Awards went to the Top 3 Overall Men & Women, top 3 in each age group and top 3 Men & Women walkers.
Given that the 4th Annual Riverwatch on the Piankatank 5K was a Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix event, a fast field came out on Saturday. In fact, no less than 23 records were set at the 4th Annual Riverwatch on the Pinakatank 5K including the Overall record for both Men and Women runners, 20 age group records and Male walkers record.
Roger Hopper, 29 of Chesapeake VA set a new Male Overall record with a time of 15:44 (5:04 minute per mile pace) beating the mark of 16:58 set by Michael Wegner in 2019. For the Women, Jenny Moran, 42 of Virginia Beach VA set the Female Overall record with a time of 19:14 (6:12 minute per mile pace) breaking the mark of 20:44 set by Thorin Jean in 2018.
Age Group records were set as follows:
Men 15-19: Lorenzo Short, 15 of Toano VA set a new age group record with a time of 19:07 breaking the mark of 23:21 set by Sam Cook in 2019.
Men 20-24: Andre Gallant, 22 of Suffolk VA set a new age group record with a time of 16:20 breaking the mark of 16:58 set by Michael Wegner in 2019.
Men 25-29: Overall Male record holder Roger Hopper, 29 of Chesapeake VA also set a new age group record with a time of 15:44 breaking the mark of 24:24 set by Benjamin Kaurich in 2017.
Men 30-34: Jonathan Torres, 30 of Newport News VA set a new age group record with a time of 18:30 breaking the mark of 23:38 set by Benjamin Kaurich in 2018.
Men 35-39: Zachary Novitske, 36 of Hayes VA set a new age group record with a time of 19:35 breaking the mark of 20:43 set by Timothy Decker in 2017.
Men 45-49: Thomas Hicks, 49 of Virginia Beach VA set a age group new record with a time of 18:00 breaking the mark of 19:39 set by Douglas Marshall in 2019.
Men 55-59: Steven Kast, 55 of Yorktown VA set a new age group record with a time of 18:21 breaking the mark of 23:21 set by Scott Bartram in 2017.
Men 60-64: Robert Whitaker, 62 of Yorktown VA set a new age group record with a time of 19:33 breaking the mark of 22:54 set by Eric Wiebke in 2017.
Men 65-69: James Gullo, 66 of Williamsburg VA set a new age group record with a time of 24:00 breaking the mark of 25:05 set by Rick Platt in 2019.
Men 70-74: Dale Abrahamson, 71 of Yorktown VA set a new age group record with a time of 23:05 breaking the mark of 29:02 set by Larry Arata in 2018.
Men 75-79: Ron Worthington, 76 of Bena VA set a new age group record with a time of 27:18 breaking the mark of 38:56 set by Richard Browder in 2018.
Women 10-14: Lydia Short, 11 of Toano VA set a new age group record with a time of 22:27 breaking the mark of 25:29 set by Cannon Jean in 2018.
Women 20-24: Svetlana Goncharova, 20 of Williamsburg VA set a new age group record with a time of 21:53 breaking the mark of 29:35 set by Beka Conrad in 2019.
Women 25-29: Meaghan Brennan, 29 of Hampton VA set a new age group record with a time of 27:54 breaking the mark of 30:19 set by Gabrielle Flowers in 2017.
Women 40-44: Overall Women’s record holder, Jenny Moran, 42 of Virginia Beach VA also set a new age group record with a time of 19:14 breaking the mark of 22:56 set by Laura Nelson in 2018.
Women 45-49: Julie Hicks, 45 of Virginia Beach VA set a new age group record with a time of 21:13 breaking the mark of 32:08 set by Sherry Parsons in 2018.
Women 50-54: Alyson Kast, 51 of Yorktown VA set a new age group record with a time of 27:28 breaking the mark of 27:54 set by Carol Bartram in 2017.
Women 55-59: Connie Glueck, 56 of Williamsburg VA set a new age group record with a time of 23:54 breaking the mark of 27:22 set by Christine Schaffner in 2019.
Women 65-69: Helen Worthington, 66 of Bena VA set a new age group record with a time of 26:22 breaking the mark of 36:58 set by Brenda Mitchell in 2017.
Women 70-74: Barbara Biasi, 73 of Yorktown VA set a new age group record with a time of 31:02 breaking the mark of 33:32 set by Ann Hirn in 2017.
For the Male Walkers, Bob Martin, 76 of Williamsburg VA set a new walking record with a time of 41:06 besting the previous record of 41:56 set by Colin Walton in 2017.
