Below are the award winners for the 7th Annual Yorktown Independence Day 8K Run held on the Tour Roads of the historic Yorktown Battlefield in Yorktown, VA on Monday morning, July 4, 2016. The race was part of the Annual Yorktown 4th of July festivities benefitting the York County Historical Museum. The race itself was conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were good for running in Virginia on the 4th of July, cloudy with a light rain and a temperature of 70. The 8K race course starts on the Tour Roads near the Route 17 overpass, heads in the direction of George Washington's Headquarters, then follows the Tour Road over the bridge crossing back over Route 17 before turning right onto a section of trails that return the runners to Surrender Field and the finish of the 8K. 410 runners entered the 8K with 398 runners completing the 8K course. The 8K course has been USATF certified VA16022RT. The course was followed correctly by the runners. Five new Age-Group Course Records were set: For the Men 40-44, Mark Tompkins, 40 of Williamsburg, VA (and the 2nd overall finisher) set a new course record with a time of 28:04 eclipsing the mark of 29:50 set by Mike Nestor of Virginia Beach in 2012. For Men 50-54, John Piggott, 51 of Williamsburg, VA (and the 5th overall finisher) set a new course record of 29:28, bettering the previous record of 30:18 set by John himself about 5 weeks ago at the Yorktown Freedom Run Memorial Day 8K which is run on the same course. For the Women, Dacia Flynn Portnoy, 7 of Corpus Christi, TX set a new record for Women 9 and under with a time of 46:44, beating the mark of 49:26 set by Sydney Garrett of Newport News in 2010.
