Below are the award winners for the 12th Annual Smart Smiles 5K held at
\nMariners’ Museum Park in Newport News, VA on Saturday morning, August 17,\u00a02019.\u00a0 The race event benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia
\nPeninsula.\u00a0 The race itself was conducted and results were generated by
\nthe Peninsula Track Club.\u00a0 Conditions at race start were cloudy and humid
\nwith a temperature of 76.<\/p>\n

A total of 291 runners entered the 5K with 237 completing the race.\u00a0 The
\nrace started and ended at Mariners’ Museum Park across from Warwick High
\nSchool.\u00a0 The course followed a road through the park and back to River
\nRoad, then across Lion’s Bridge to a turnaround and back.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 5K
\ncourse is USATF Certified #VA17036RT and was followed correctly by the
\nrunners.<\/p>\n

The Smart Smiles 5K is also the 8th event in the 12-race Peninsula Track
\nClub Grand Prix.\u00a0 The next PTC Grand Prix event is the Mulberry Island
\nHalf Marathon on Saturday, September 14.<\/p>\n

1st Overall for the Men was Ryan Carroll, 36 of Chesapeake VA with a time
\nof 16:59 (5:28 per mile pace).\u00a0 2nd Male was the 2018 winner, Victor
\nFleming, 40 of Smithfield VA in a time of 17:15.\u00a0 3rd Overall for the Men
\nwas Michael Jones, 16 of Chesapeake VA in 18:02.<\/p>\n

For the Women, 1st Overall was Meghan Nakamura, 33 of Newport News VA in
\na time of 23:31.\u00a0 2nd Woman Overall was Lorraine Upton, 15 of Windsor VA
\nfinishing in 24:13.\u00a0 3rd Overall for the Women was Janelle Fricke, 61 of
\nHayes VA in 25:13.<\/p>\n

FIve new age group records were set at the 12th running of the Smart
\nSmiles 5K.<\/p>\n

2nd Overall Male, Victor Flemming, set an age group record for Men 40-44
\nwith a time of 17:15, besting the previous record of 17:32 set by Steve
\nSpeirs in 2010.\u00a0 Victor Flemming also holds the age group record for Men
\n35-39 with a time of 16:29 set in 2014.<\/p>\n

For Men 70-74, Dale Abrahamson, 70 of Yorktown set a new age group record
\nwith a time of 23:44 eclipsing the old mark of 26:22 set by Larry Arata
\nin 2015.<\/p>\n

Joseph Polinski, 81 of Smithfield VA set a new age group record for Men
\n80-84 with a time of 36:28 beating the old mark of 38:00 set by Mike
\nKelly in 2016.<\/p>\n

Robert S White, 95 of Hampton, established a new age group record for Men
\n90 & Over with a time of 56:02<\/p>\n

For the Women, Barbara Biasi, 71 of Yorktown broke the age group record
\nfor Women 70-74 with a time of 31:23 beating the record Barbara herself
\npreviously set in 2018 of 31:50.<\/p>\n
