The 27th Annual Coast Guard Day 5K held at Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown, VA on Saturday morning, July 5, 2015. The race event was organized by the Coast Guard Training Center MWR. The race itself was conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were sunny with a slight breeze and temperatures around 80.
317 runners entered the 5K (up from 306 in 2014) with 301 runners completing the race (up from 277 in 2014). The race started near the gym on the Coast Guard base, went out the front gate onto the Yorktown Battlefield, making a loop that went downhill to the Wormley Creek Dam, then back uphill towards the Moore house in Yorktown before returning to the Coast Guard Base through the main gate, finishing at the gym. The course was a USATF certified 5K course (USATF cert. # VA10027RT) and was followed correctly by the runners.
Awards for both male and female were given to the top 3 runners male and female overall, top 3 runners in each age group, and top three active duty Coast Guard personnel.
For the men, Ethan Mines, 17 of Panama City, FL was Top Male Overall finisher with a time of 17:03 holding off a challenge from Andrew Neils, 30 of Charlottesville, VA finishing as 2nd Male with a time of 17:08. Makinnley Casey, 17 of Poquoson, VA placed 3rd Male Overall with a time of 17:17.
For the women, Jessica Riggs, 38 of Surry, VA was the Top Woman Overall finishing with a time of 20:12. 2nd Woman Overall was Melinda Cornwell, 23 of Newport News, VA (21:35) followed by Kate Van Emmenk, 19 of Onemo, VA (21:58).
In the 27th running of the Coast Guard Day 5K one new course record was set. For the second year in a row Benjamin Werve, 14 of Virginia Beach set a course record for Men 10-14 with a time of 17:30 breaking the mark of 17:58 that he set in 2014.
The Coast Guard Day 5K was also the 6th race of the 2014 Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix – a series of 12 road racing events that determine the 2015 PTC Grand Prix Champion.

Special note:
Race day registrants and accompanying spectators will experience extra screening at the base security gate. You will have to present a picture ID, vehicle registration and proof of insurance to enter the base. Passengers 16 & older will also need to provide a picture ID. Please allow extra time to clear security.
