Below are the award winners and full results for the 30th Annual Yorktown Battlefield 10-Mile Run held on the tour roads of the Yorktown Battlefield on Saturday morning, November 4, 2023. The race was sponsored by the Yorktown Lions Club.The 10-Mile course started and finished near Surrender Field on the Yorktown Battlefield. The 10 Mile course is USATF certified #VA23002RT and was followed correctly by the runners. The Yorktown Battlefield 10 Miler is the tenth race of the 12-race 2023 Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix race series as well as a Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix event.The 5K course started and finished near Surrender Field on the Yorktown Battlefield with a turn-around near the Washington’s Headquarters loop. The 5K course is not certified.The 2023 edition of the Yorktown Battlefield 10-Mile Run was held under good running conditions: clear and sunny, with a temperature of 44 at race start, but rising during the first hour of the event into the 50s. A total of 79 runners entered the races (65 in the 10-Mile Run and 14 in the 5K) with 75 finishing (61 in the 10-Mile Run and 14 in the 5K) on the scenic Yorktown Battlefield tour roads.Two new age group course records for the Yorktown Battlefield 10-Mile Run were set today, and also a new Virginia State age group record in the 10 Mile distance.The Yorktown Battlefield 10 Miler is no stranger to Virginia state records. Seven of the current Virginia 10 Mile road race state records were set at one of the previous Yorktown Battlefield 10 Milers over its 30 year history: Tom Ray (1:13:55 for M70-74 in 2003); Barbara Mathewson (1:10:32 for F55-59 in 2004); Rose Crist (1:16:01 for F60-64 in 2017); Betty Brothers (1:22:59 for F70-74 in 2017); Ben Dyer (1:25:52 for M75-79 in 2018); Joey Hallock for F65-69 in 2020) and most recently Isabella Strumke (1:19:18 for F-9&under in 2022).In 2023 there is now an eighth record from this race. 2nd Place Overall Male, Pete Gibson of Murfreesboro NC set a new age group course record for Men 65-69 with a time of 1:03:57 besting the previous course record of 1:08:28 set by Tom Ray in 1998. But Gibson’s time of 1:03:57 is in fact quicker than the current Virginia State 10 Mile record for Men 65-69: 1:05:54 set by John Hosner in 1985!For Men 10-14, Braxton Lee, 14 of Quinton VA set a new age group record with a time of 1:13:09 beating the previous record of 1:14:14 set by Brian Derr in 1999.Finish line and results services were provided by the Peninsula Track Club.
