Below are the award winners for the 29th Annual Coast Guard Day 5K held
at Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown, VA on Saturday morning, July
29, 2017. The race event was organized by the Coast Guard Training
Center MWR. The race itself was conducted and results were generated by
the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were cloudy, very
numid with a slight breeze and a temperature of 74 at race start.
346 runners entered the 5K with 317 runners completing the race. The
race started near the gym on the Coast Guard base, went out the front
gate onto the Yorktown Battlefield towards Redoubts 9 & 10, then making a
loop that went downhill to the Wormley Creek Dam and back uphill towards
the Moore house in Yorktown before returning to the Coast Guard Base
through the main gate, finishing at the gym. The course was a USATF
certified 5K course (USATF cert. # VA10027RT) and was followed correctly
by the runners.
The Coast Guard Day 5K was also 7th race of the 2017 Peninsula Track Club
Grand Prix – a series of 12 road racing events that determine the 2016
PTC Grand Prix Champion. It was also the 8th race in the Hampton Roads
Super Grand Prix – a series of 15 road racing events put on by the PTC,
the Colonial Road Runners and the Tidewater Striders.
Awards for both male and female were given to the top 3 runners male and
female overall, top 3 runners in each age group, and top three active
duty Coast Guard personnel.
For the men, Jack Little, 23 of Yorktown, VA was Top Male Overall
finisher with a time of 16:09 (5:12 pace). Second Overall Male was Andre
Jordan, 17 of Chesapeake, VA with a time of 16:24. Roger Hopper of
Norfolk, VA placed as 3rd Male Overall with a time of 16:36.
For the women, Sara Belamarich, 17 of Chesapeake, VA was the Top Woman
Overall finishing with a time of 19:49. 2nd Woman Overall was Thorin
Jean, 16 of Williamsburg, VA in 20:33 followed by Emily Honeycutt, 26 of
Newport News, VA with a time of 20:59
In the 29th running of the Coast Guard Day 5K two age group course
records were set.
Rose Crist, 62 of Lanexa, VA set a new age group record for Women, 60-64
with a time of 22:57 breaking the mark of 22:58 set by Joan Coven in
2002.
Judy Stewart, 78 of Williamsburg, VA set a new age group record for
Women, 75-79 with a time of 36:55 besting the mark set by Ann Mancoagli
of 37:32 set in 2012.
