The 26th Annual Coast Guard Day 5K was held at Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown, VA on Saturday morning, July 26, 2014. The race event was organized by the Coast Guard Training Center MWR. The race itself was conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were sunny with a slight breeze and temperatures in the low 80s.
There were 306 runners entered in the 5K (down from the record number of 410 in 2013) with 277 runners completing the race (also down from the record of 378 in 2013). The race started near the gym on the Coast Guard base, went out the front gate onto the Yorktown Battlefield, making a loop that went downhill to the Wormley Creek Dam, then back uphill towards the Moore house in Yorktown before returning to the Coast Guard Base through the main gate, finishing at the gym. The course was a USATF certified 5K course (USATF cert. # VA10027RT) and was followed correctly by the runners.
Awards for both male and female were given to the top 3 runners overall, top 3 runners in each age group, and top three active duty Coast Guard personnel.
For the men, Russell Reed, 21 of Onemo, VA was Top Male Overall with a
time of 16:40 followed by Todd Kessler, 31 of Newport News, VA (17:36)
and Ben Werve, 13 of Virginia Beach (17:53 – setting a course record for
Men 10-14 – old record of 18:11 set by Ryan Neuhart in 1996.
For the women, Mercedes Castillo-D’Amico, 56 of Newport News won the race for the third year in a row in a time of 20:40. 2nd Woman Overall was Kim Ratcliffe, 46 of Yorktown, VA (21:25) followed by Emily Honeycutt, 23 of West Point, VA (21:28).
