The 5th Annual Smart Smiles 5K held at Mariners’ Museum Park in Newport News, VA on Saturday morning, August 18, 2012. The race event benefited the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula. The race itself was conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were mostly cloudy and humid with temperatures in the upper 70s.237 runners entered the 5K (up from 211 in 2011) with 216 completing the race (up from 198 in 2011). The race started and ended at Mariners’
Museum Park across from Warwick High School. The course followed a road through the park and back to River Road, then across Lion’s Bridge to a turnaround and back. The course was accuratly measured, but is not a USATF certified 5K course. The course was followed correctly by the runners.
