The 1st Annual ECPI 8K was held at Mariners’ Museum Park in Newport News, VA on Saturday morning, September 15, 2012. The race event benefited the Wounded Warrior Project. The race itself was conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club.
Conditions at race time were excellent for running, mostly sunny with low humidity, a light breeze and temperatures around 70.
The overall winner was Paul Chekal, 41 of Newport News with a time of 29:47 (6:00 minute per mile pace). The second runner to finish was the First Woman Overall, Christal Witte, 27 of Yorktown with a time of 31:41 (6:23 pace).142 runners entered the 8K with 101 completing the race. The race started and ended at Mariners’ Museum Park across from Warwick High School. The course followed an out-and-back course following a road through the park to River Road, across Lion’s Bridge and up Museum Drive
to a turnaround near the Peninsula Fine Arts Center and back. The 8K course was accuratly measured, but is not USATF certified at this time. The course was followed correctly by the runners.
