Williamsburg – Lake Matoaka Trail Challenge 4.3 Mile (PTC Summer Fun Run Series, oldest continuously held race on the Peninsula), 6:30 p.m., Zable Stadium, College of William and Mary. Peninsula Track Club Summer Fun Run Series event. Entry fee is two cans of people or pet food for charity. Race day registration only, starting at 5:30 p.m. Susan Hagel (757-754-4859 cell) or Rick Platt (757-229-7375, 757-345-1431). PTC website: www.peninsulatrackclub.com. Note that after the refreshments and awards ceremony (which includes special surprise awards and door prizes), there will be a large group of CRR and PTC people at a post-race party at the outside porch of the College Deli, directly across Richmond Road from the stadium, or at the Brickhouse Tavern, depending on which looks best for seating a large group.

Course: The Lake Matoaka Trail Challenge is a combination road and wooded trail course, starting and finishing from in front of the College of William and Mary football stadium and track. A quick left at the W&M Alumni House, then down College Terrace to a left on Dillard Drive, then a right onto Compton Drive, in front of William and Mary House. Around the one-mile mark, the course takes a left up the hill, into the Lake Matoaka Trails, and continues for two miles on those trails, with four challenging hills, and varied terrain and footing on the dirt trail. The trail exits with a left onto Mill Neck Road, where there will be a water stop, manned by Bruce Davis of the PTC. At the bottom of the hill on Mill Neck Road, take a left onto Jamestown Road, facing traffic, and go more than a half mile to a left onto Landrum Drive and the W&M campus dormitories. Go right at the bottom of the hill past the Crim Dell pond, then up a hill past the W&M University Center to a finish at the stadium entrance. Distance is 4.3 miles, with 2 miles of trails, and 2.3 miles of roads. A fun preparation for high school cross country teams. Zable Stadium is at the intersection of Richmond Road and Scotland Street.

Registration: A free event, with no T-shirts, with the “entry fee” a donation of two cans of food, for either people or pets. Sign up is race day only, starting at 5:30 p.m. There will be refreshments afterwards, before the awards ceremony, which recognizes the top 5 men and top 5 women. There will also be fun door prizes for all!
